The Sustainable Development Research Institute (SDRI) is part of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). SDRI delivers TUS’s ambition to be at the forefront of sustainable development by delivering inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research and building new knowledge and delivering positive impacts for and outcomes for society.
SDRI builds on the extensive foundation of applied research within the TUS Thurles campus to create a Nationally and Internationally recognised centre of excellence which enables communities, enterprise, and industry to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Focused around the themes of Nature, Economy, Society and Wellbeing, SDRI delivers a step change in TUS’ contribution to the sustainable development agenda, delivering on the TUS ambition of being a research informed organisation and inform future policy through active collaboration with HEIs, RPOs and policy makers Nationally and Internationally.
The aim of SDRI is to maximise the impact of TUS on the sustainable development of the region through high quality, applied research informed and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, SDRI works across the University supporting access to National and EU funding, engaging with public and private sectors with an applied focus engaged in capacity building, applied research and development activities with an International, EU, National and Regional Focus.
TUS SDRI is currently working in over 25 projects funded under multiple streams Nationally and Internationally, collaborating with over 150 institutions from 21 countries. SDRI main research activities can be classified under the following topics: Education for Sustainability, Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Buildings, and Sustainable Regions. #AGRI&TOUR can be classified under Sustainable Regions where SDRI contributes to the areas of Tourism, Social Enterprise, and Rural Development.
