Since 2001, Associazione Sviluppo Rurale (ASR) has operated as a non-political, non-profit national organization dedicated to fostering sustainable development across Italy and abroad. The association specifically targets territories facing structural delays, working to bridge the gap between rural potential and economic growth. ASR serves as a strategic partner for approximately 28 public entities—including municipalities, mountain communities, and provinces across nine Italian regions—as well as seven private national associations representing the agricultural, professional, and academic sectors.
By activating European, national, and regional funding opportunities, ASR implements strategies designed to safeguard local natural and cultural resources while enhancing the socio-economic wellbeing of resident populations. The association operates through a multidisciplinary team of professionals who provide technical assistance, training, and innovative strategies to move rural economies away from welfare dependency and toward competitive, self-sustaining growth.
Why Agritourism and Rural Development?
For ASR, agritourism is not merely a hospitality niche but a vital pillar of rural regeneration. It represents the intersection of sustainable tourism, agricultural innovation, and land conservation. By integrating tourism into the farming lifestyle, ASR helps rural areas combat depopulation and abandonment. Agritourism allows small and medium-sized farms to diversify their income, promotes the “slow tourism” trend, and creates a direct link between producers and consumers. To further these goals, ASR has spearheaded two pivotal international projects:
- Farms’ Charm: This initiative focuses on empowering small and medium farmers to transition into the agritourism sector. By developing Open Educational Resources (OER) and collecting best practices from existing successful farms, the project provides farmers with the tools to diversify their income. This approach not only revitalizes local communities but also promotes a sustainable form of tourism that encourages visitors to stay longer and engage deeply with the territory.
- ReGenerate: Addressing the urgent need for climate-friendly solutions, this project equips farmers with the knowledge and tools of regenerative agriculture. By bridging the gap between theoretical environmental goals and practical farming methods, ReGenerate fosters a movement toward eco-friendly agriculture. This ensures that the rural landscape—the very foundation of the agritourism experience—remains healthy, productive, and resilient for future generations.
Through these initiatives and its ongoing commitment to the “attraction methodology” for new residents, ASR continues to serve as a catalyst for innovation. Whether it is through the valorization of the truffle supply chain or the improvement of micro-enterprise competitiveness, the association remains steadfast in its mission to transform rural and mountainous areas into vibrant, sustainable hubs of European excellence.
